Fishing at E.G. Simmons Park, Ruskin

E.G. Simmons Park

E.G. Simmons Park in Ruskin offers a campground along with its beaches and mazy mangrove-lined waterways for paddlers and anglers along Tampa Bay.

Ruskin       ( 27.739927,-82.466138 )

Fishing at E.G. Simmons Park, Ruskin

“There’s a dolphin … right there!” The angler, looking to pick up a fish or two for the evening meal, had been moving from spot to spot around the park as I drove through, enchanted with my new discovery. I found her on an observation deck over a shallow lagoon, watching the surface break as a fin sliced past the mangroves.

Ruskin isn’t a place you’d think of for camping, or so I thought until I discovered E.G. Simmons Park. This was another foray off US 41, watching for those brown signs that signify that something natural is hiding around the bend. I’ve not known the eastern shore of Tampa Bay to be a place for hiking, but it’s a paddler’s delight. Clinging to slender mangrove-lined spits of land that jut out into the wide open of Tampa Bay, this particular county park has two campgrounds where you can launch a kayak right out of the back of your space, plus a beach with lifeguard and pleasant playground with a mini climbing wall. Paved trails link various sections of the park, and the winding road system is perfect for an outing on a bicycle with the tots.

E.G. Simmons Conservation Park offers beautiful views, camping, fishing, waterway access

E.g. simmons conservation park.

Take a tour of E.G. Simmons Conservation Park.

RUSKIN, Fla. - Hillsborough County opened all of its conservation parks this past week allowing residents more space to stretch out and enjoy time outdoors.

One of those parks is the 258-acre E.G. Simmons Conservation Park in Ruskin.

"I am thrilled that the park is open again," exclaimed Park Manager Dillon McClure. "People can finally come back to the park."

The sprawling location offers campsites, fishing and access to local waterways including Tampa Bay.

fishing report e g simmons park

"This is hands-down the best place to fish off the shore in Hillsborough County," shared McClure. "Just throw a line in."

But if fishing is not your thing, you can enjoy the other aquatic life in the water. Manatees, dolphins and stingrays are frequent visitors to the natural shoreline areas around the park.

"It's important to get the parks open to get people out of the house," said McClure.

The campsites are open at just 50%, so expect to be more on your own in those areas. The boat ramps are open and the shoreline is open for fishermen to use.

fishing report e g simmons park

And while being closed was not ideal during the pandemic shutdown, McClure stated, "(The) extended period the park was closed, we were able to get a lot of projects done that we wouldn't be able to because of the patrons."

They cleared exotic invasive plants out of the canals and waterways; they trimmed back the tree canopies to allow for sunshine to get into those heavily forested areas; and they added seven new campsites to the campgrounds.

McClure's passion for this park is evident in his advocating for its use, "I see the park as a breathing entity."

The beauty of the park is visible on a clear day as you can see the skylines of downtown St. Petersburg, downtown Tampa and even MacDill Air Force Base across Tampa Bay.

McClure exclaimed, "There's not a view in Hillsborough County like this!"

Huge level sites with water and 30 amp electric. $28 or $18 over 55. We stayed here in a 40 ft motorhome.

i loved it then again I went in winter time a little bit of no see ums but other wise great, fishing is easy as some sites have a canal on the rear. kids have plenty of parks. pets are welcomed at no extra charge.

| Very nice park

By user-5090209... on 2017-10-23.

Nice park with good size sites, the only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is the blond headed lady that says she is the park manager. She is rude hateful and should not be in a position dealing with the public.

| Great county park with some water sites

By user-5918249... on 2018-05-17.

This is a fantastic county park with 2 camping areas. Some sites are on the water and the ones in the East campground are quite large. Restrooms are clean and a lot of them. There’s places to boat, kayak, fish, beach and playground. Rates are reasonable, but no reservations so it can be difficult to get a spot especially during snowbird season. No see ums are there but bug spray helped.

The price is great, $18 if over 55. Plenty of sites with shade and nice clean bathrooms/showers. However, I have a dog with medium length hair and within 2 minutes she was full of prickers and stick tights!

The best spot and the price is right. The folks who winter down here are delightful. Yes. There are bugs. This is Florida. No reservations though so you'd better get down here early or you'll miss out!
