Creative Writing Jobs Abroad

Travel and creative writing are a perfect match. Leaving home and taking up the expat lifestyle in some far corner of the world is bound to inspire great stories within you. Whether your ultimate interests lay in fiction or nonfiction, screenwriting or novels, high drama or publications, a creative writing job abroad can be the start of something truly special.

Why not work abroad in creative writing? In today’s globally connected world, writers have the luxury of being increasingly mobile with their craft. As English is catching on everywhere as a universal second language, native speaking writers are in increased demand across the globe as well. The demand for creative writers is out there, you must only decide where you wish to go and what type of work you wish to engage in.

Your writing can take you anywhere. As globalization spreads across the world, educated people from everywhere are expected to know English as a second language more and more. As such, creative writers in the English language will find more and more audiences for their work sprouting up around the world, and more opportunity for creative writing jobs abroad as well.

One particularly large market right now is China . As the country continues to integrate into the global stage and open its doors to foreign influence, international publications are sprouting up in many of its major cities. It is very easy for English speakers to find a creative writing job in China in a variety of different formats.

The same is true elsewhere in the world where English is of increasing importance to local populations. For example, Asia and Europe are two of the most accessible regions in the world, because of the many different regional languages which require people to communicate together in English. On the other hand, Central and South America may be more difficult places to find creative writing jobs abroad because most people in these regions communicate in Spanish.

Then of course there are creative writing jobs abroad in English speaking countries themselves. The U.S., Canada, the UK, and Australia are all big markets for creative writers. Not surprisingly the competition will be more fierce in these places, but the demand for content is greater as well.

Every creative writer knows that steady employment for their craft can be hard to come by. However, there is surprisingly a lot of opportunity internationally if you look in the right places.

The first obvious type of job abroad is travel writing. There are many different travel companies in a variety of niches that are in continuous need of content, making it possible to land a creative writing job that takes you all over the world. These jobs often come in the form of freelance writing positions. While the work is not as purely glamorous as it might seem (think a lot of research, reviews, hard exploration), it can be a fun and exciting vocation nonetheless.

Working for a local publication or in journalism is another opportunity for creative writers to gain employment abroad in the field. Most global cities have opportunity in this field, although keep in mind that English language jobs may be limited in many of these places too. Some major international publications also have international offices across the world, so these big companies would be great places to find creative writing jobs abroad too.

Another type of creative writing job abroad is working as a blogger or for the content team of a website. It is hard to gain leverage to the point where you can start making a profit as an individual blogger, but many startups and other web based companies located around the world are in continuous need of writers to create content.

As an unfortunate rule of the trade, writers do not make much money. Unless you meet large commercial success with your creative writing job abroad, then odds are that you will be earning a living and not much more. However, it is certainly possible to boost your income prospects if you take on a position which includes elements of editing, marketing, and advertising as well.

Also, the affordability of living as a writer might greatly increase if you find work in the developing world, for the simple reason that costs of living will be significantly cheaper. Especially if you are earning an international salary, setting up shop in regions of Central America or Southeast Asia for example will be much more affordable than Europe or North America.

Develop as a Writer. Traveling the world or living abroad as an expat will greatly expand your perspective as a creative writer. You will be challenged to write from a sharply original viewpoint that stems from your newfound experiences.

Gain International Work Experience. Whatever future job you may apply to, having worked abroad looks great to prospective employers. It shows that you are flexible, adaptable, and can thrive in a challenging new environment.

Have an Adventure. Let’s be real, if you are traveling the world as a creative writer then you are bound to have some crazy experiences well worth the tale. Living abroad is the perfect way to improve your skills while gathering memories and impressions that dynamically change not only your writing, but who you are.

Studying abroad will help you develop personally, academically and professionally; you can gain a better understanding of cultural nuances to aid in your literary analysis or find inspiration for your next piece of creative writing. There is a reason so much popular and classic literature comes from Europe – inspiration and history lie around every corner.

Creative Writing Degree Programs

Nothing inspires one to write quite like traveling the world. The process of leaving home, placing yourself in an entirely foreign cultural context, and being challenged to adapt to your new surroundings inevitably leads to a treasure chest of adventures and worthwhile stories to be told. Earning your degree abroad in creative writing will be a tremendous educational and developmental experience that will inspire you to do great things!

Aldous Huxley once wrote, “to travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” By journeying into the world and exploring foreign cities and cultures firsthand you will discover the true significance of this comment. Creative writing is about expanding your perspective as well as developing a unique voice, and to find true success in the field you must come to your own conclusions about life in this crazy world of ours. Earning a degree abroad in creative writing is your first step toward a greater understanding of and originality with the craft.

If you want to earn a degree in creative writing abroad, there is a somewhat glaring obstacle which limits where you can study, the language you will be writing in! While many countries around the world teach their citizens English as a second language, the primary language of education at most universities remains the native tongue of each nation. There are of course exceptions, such as programs at small international centers or satellite schools, and these are definitely worth looking into; but if you plan on pursuing a full time degree at a foreign university then the most opportunities await you in countries where English is the primary language of education.

The good news is that this list of countries is longer than you might think. Beginning with the obvious there are the British Isles , where many prestigious universities in the countries of England , Ireland , Scotland , and Wales offer undergraduate and graduate creative writing degree programs for international students.

Then there is North America , specifically the United States and Canada , which hosts an immense number of universities with creative writing degree programs at all levels (the programs at the Universities of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan are respectively considered to be three of the best in the world).

In the Southern hemisphere you can earn a creative writing degree abroad in most English speaking countries of the former Commonwealth, specifically South Africa , India , Australia , and New Zealand . English in the language of education in all of the latter nations, despite some of them utilizing their native young for informal communications.

Again your options for creative writing degrees abroad are not strictly limited to the aforementioned countries, but these tend to boast the most prestigious and rewarding creative writing degree programs for English speakers!

Creative writing is a flexible degree, which can be used for a variety of purposes. Whether your aspirations lie in short stories, screenplays, novels, or what have you, there are many different ways you can focus a creative writing degree to help facilitate your ambitions.

Undergraduate creative writing degree programs are offered by most universities worldwide. If not, then a focus in creative writing is usually possible within a larger undergraduate degree, in subjects like English, literature, or writing-related studies. You will likely will be taking a wide variety of courses when studying creative writing abroad, ranging from theory to analysis to practice. Creative writing undergraduate degree programs tend to last three or four years and, depending on the university, will also require you to complete general education studies.

At the graduate level, an M.F.A. or M.A. degree program in creative writing typically lasts one or two years, and allows you to focus more specifically on a particular type of creative writing (i.e. screenwriting, poetry, creative non-fiction, etc.). Subject matter within creative writing courses tend to cover aspects of narrative story, such as telling as characterization, plot structure, shaping language, and other ways to make stories compelling. Postgraduate creative writing degree programs also sometimes give students the opportunity to teach their own courses at the undergraduate level for pay.

The benefits of moving abroad to pursue your creative writing degree in a foreign country far exceed the academic experience you can get by studying the same subject in the comfort of your home nation. You will find life beyond the walls of your classroom to be the greatest teacher, as you continuously adapt and break down preconceived notions all while building up a new perspective of yourself and the world that surrounds you. Some of the greatest writers in history credit travel as a primary inspiration, and by enrolling in a creative writing degree program abroad you will surely come to share that spark of imagination.

Extended Deadline

Request Information

Jul 7 - 27, 2024

Spark your literary inspiration in London, home to countless authors and stories that have shaped the world.

Take a captivating trip through London, turning it into a central character in your writing. Through expert-led workshops, develop the tools and techniques needed to write in different genres. Take cues from renowned works of prose, poetry, and drama and analyze how these forms are reimagined in contemporary mediums—films, web-based media, and graphic fiction. As you refine your literary taste, you'll craft your own creative writing portfolio!

Connect with writers and storytellers. Roam the real sites that served as backdrops for the works of Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Woolf, and more. Examine the contrasting facets of London, exploring both its Gothic shadows and its aspirational allure that has enticed migrants from across the globe to call it home.

Discover the places and people that make London buzz with creativity. Meet local teens and indulge in local flavors, like fish and chips. Experience life outside of London, too, on an excursion to Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon. In the end, you’ll realize your literary ideas and add your unique contributions to London’s literature.
