But we need books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. When writers make us shake our heads with the exactness of their prose and their truths, and even make us laugh about ourselves or life, our buoyancy is restored. We are given a shot at dancing with, or at least clapping along with, the absurdity of life, instead of being squashed by it over and over again. "Have books ‘happened’ to you? Unless your answer to that question is ‘yes,’ I’m unsure how to talk to you." – Haruki Murakami

"A story can always break into pieces while it sits inside a book on a shelf; and, decades after we have read it even twenty times, it can open us up, by cut or caress, to a new truth." – Andre Dubus, Meditations from a Movable Chair

"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." – Frederick Douglass

"Literature is the safe and traditional vehicle through which we learn about the world and pass on values from one generation to the next. Books save lives." – Laurie Anderson

"Reading fiction is important. It is a vital means of imagining a life other than our own, which in turn makes us more empathetic beings. Following complex story lines stretches our brains beyond the 140 characters of sound-bite thinking, and staying within the world of a novel gives us the ability to be quiet and alone, two skills that are disappearing faster than the polar icecaps." – Ann Patchett

"Both reading and writing are experiences – lifelong – in the course of which we who encounter words used in certain ways are persuaded by them to be brought mind and heart within the presence, the power, of the imagination." – Eudora Welty

"A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading." – William Styron

"I guess a big part of serious fiction’s purpose is to give the reader, who like all of us is sort of marooned in her own skull, to give her imaginative access to other selves." – David Foster Wallace

World Book Day quotes

World Book Day, also known as World Book and Copyright Day, is celebrated on April 23 every year to promote, reading, publishing and copyright. World Book Day is organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). This year is the 25th edition of World Book Day.

"During the last year when most countries have seen periods of confinement and people have had to limit their time spent outside, books have proved to be powerful tools to combat isolation, reinforce ties between people, expand our horizons, while stimulating our minds and creativity. In some countries the number of books read has doubled," UNESCO said on its website.

World Book Day History

In 1995, UNESCO decided that World Book would be celebrated on April 23 as it is the death anniversary of prominent authors William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Josep Pla, and also the birth anniversary Manuel Mejia Vallejo, Haldor K Laxness and Maurice Druon.

World Book Capital 2021

Every year, UNESCO and the international organisations representing the three major sectors of the book industry - publishers, booksellers, and libraries - select the World Book Capital for a one-year period. The World Book Capital for 2021 is Tbilisi in Georgia.

The tragic ending of ‘one day’ explained: why emma’s fate was sealed.

Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) in "One Day" on Netflix.

Netflix’s adaptation of One Day is here just in time for Valentine’s Day. If you’re unfamiliar with how David Nicholls’ best-selling book ends, then there’s a good chance you’re gutted by the show’s devastating conclusion.

The series, based on Nicholls’ 2009 book of the same name , tells the story of a will-they-won’t-they love story between two friends over two decades. Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) first cross paths on the night of their graduation from Edinburgh University on July 15, 1998. Although they spend an evening together, the pair goes their separate ways the next morning. In each episode of the series, viewers see Dex and Em, one year older, on this one particular date.

“It’s rare to be able to play the same character over 20 years. Every episode was like its own movie. There is a degree of isolation between each episode,” Mod told Forbes contributor Dana Feldman. “When we were filming, we didn’t have to think about the episode before or after it. Each existed in its bubble in a way. So, that was new structurally. It was a massive challenge but the writing was so good and I think the timing of the story unfolds in a way that just felt natural.”

Woodall added, “From Dexter’s point of view, true love was the one thing remaining in his life after all the mayhem that he chose to put himself through. He realized that the thing that mattered was being with the person that he wanted to be around all the time, which he knew was Emma. He wasn’t seeing it at the time because he was distracted and young. He goes off a bit and then realizes that companionship is one of the most important things in life.”

Nicholls’ novel has amassed a huge following, selling over 5 million copies worldwide in more than 40 languages. Before Netflix ordered the 14-part limited series, the book was adapted into a film in 2011 starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. Nicholls serves as an executive producer on One Day, while Essie Davis, Tim McInnerny, Toby Stephens, and Joely Richardson also star.

Nasa urges u.s. public to see april 8’s total solar eclipse—and drops a home truth, a psychologist offers 3 ways out of a ‘midnight meltdown’, one day ending explained.

It’s time to get your tissues ready. Read on to take a deep dive into the ending of One Day, including what happens to Emma and Dexter at the end of the series . (Warning: Spoilers ahead.)

When Do Emma and Dexter Get Together In One Day ?

Emma and Dexter finally get together in Episode 12, which takes place on July 15, 1999. The pair spend a day in Paris together, as Emma has been living there on a research trip, while Dex is recovering from his divorce from Sylvie.

Dex brings up their night together before Emma left London. When Dex attempts to kiss her, Emma turns him down and says she’s been seeing someone, which is when finally discuss the night they slept together. Emma tells him that they were intoxicated and he was upset, but Dex tells her that he hasn’t stopped thinking about her.

Emma offers to take Dex to dinner with her new boyfriend, Jean-Pierre, but he pretends not to feel well so they can go out without him. When Emma comes back by herself, the pair passionately hook up. Emma tells Dex that if he leads her or goes back to his old behavior, she will murder him, while Dex promises her that he won’t and that she can’t get rid of him.

In the following years, Emma and Dex are engaged and planning a wedding, and Emma tells Dex she wants to have a baby. The couple also plans to open a Parisian café and has agreed to move in together. However, their dreams are tragically shattered.

Does Emma Die In One Day ?

Ambika Mod as Emma in "One Day" On Netflix.

Although Emma and Dexter manage to share a few years of love and marriage — all of that comes to a devastating halt in Episode 13. On one July 15, Emma is hit by a car and killed while riding her bike. Emma’s death also occurs in the book and the 2011 film.

“I didn’t want to do that to her because I love her, and the audience does not want [that]. Everyone who read the book remembers how they felt when that happened. You just want to throw the book out the window,” showrunner Nicole Taylor told The Wrap .

Taylor said she even considered ending the series differently, “but fundamentally, that ending is stitched into the work as a whole.” She continued, “The story kind of has its own thematic integrity, it has its own structural integrity. I feel like the overall meaning of the piece requires that, and I felt like any changing of the ending would be gratuitous and undermine the overall impact of the piece so I think it was the right thing to have a good think about it, question it and not just take it as given.”

How does One Day end on Netflix?

Leo Woodall as Dexter in "One Day" On Netflix.

After Emma’s death, Dexter is filled with grief, and he resumes binge drinking while his life is spiraling around him. After getting drunk at a birthday party with his daughter, getting kicked out of a bar, and passing out on the door of his ex, Sylvie, he has a sentimental moment with his father, who tells him that he needs to live life as if Emma were still there.

One year later, Dex has his life back on track. His family, Tilly, and Emma’s ex, Ian, surprise him at his new flat. Dex and Ian have a heart-to-heart, and he wants Dex to know how much Emma loved him and how much he had meant to her. When everyone’s gone, Dex imagines Emma with him, telling him it’s okay to throw out her old things — except the photos. She also says that he’ll hurt less as time goes on.

“Thankfully, his relationship with his daughter is in a really good place at that point. You’re left knowing that he’ll always be grieving and missing her, but that he’s kind of come out of the tough stages of it,” Woodall told The Wrap about his character’s mindset a year after Emma’s passing. “He’s got his life back together and he’s gonna move on, move forward. as best he can.”

The final day in One Day is marked in 2007, and viewers see Dex return to the University of Edinburgh. The episode ends just like the premiere — with Dex and Jasmine walking up the cobbled steps in Scotland with the past and present intertwined. In the scene, they exchange numbers, but Dex gives Emma one more kiss goodbye. In an instant, Dexter is reliving all of their kisses, from the end to the beginning, before finishing with their first kiss.

All 14 episodes of One Day are streaming on Netflix.

The Ending Of One Day , The Book By David Nicholls, Is Devastating

Now a limited series, the friends-to-lovers story packs an emotional punch.

Emma and Dexter in 'One Day.' Photo via Netflix

Netflix’s new series One Day follows a friends-to-lovers couple, Emma and Dexter, over nearly two decades together — their slow-burn romance told through vignettes of their lives on the same day every year. If it sounds familiar, it might be because Anne Hathaway starred in the film version in 2011. But both works are based on David Nicholls’ 2009 novel of the same name, and it’s a ride .

The limited series, which dropped on Feb. 8, dedicates an episode to each year of Emma and Dexter’s love story. It’s a natural format for One Day’s unique narrative structure , Nicholls told Entertainment Weekly. “Between making the movie and making this version, it's almost as if this new medium was invented,” he said. “Streaming TV is much more analogous to the experience [of] reading a novel than a movie.”

Can’t wait to find out what happens? Here’s a handy guide to the One Day book ending and plot summary as you watch along.

Their Postgrad Friendship

On July 15, 1988, Emma and Dexter hook up for the first time after graduating from college in Edinburgh, Scotland. They share their fears about growing up — she wants to change the world, and he just wants to have a cool, glamorous life.

They don’t date, but they develop a close friendship. Emma tries to be a playwright and finds work at a restaurant in London, while Dexter travels the world. The pair exchange letters, and Dexter once writes to confess his feelings for her and invite her to join him abroad. However, that fateful letter gets lost before he can send it.

But they stay close, even going on a trip to Greece where they’re both internally pining for each other — but try not to break the “rules” of their friendship.

Things Get Complicated

Over time, Emma and Dexter’s relationship goes through ups and downs. While Dexter finds success in TV hosting, he struggles with substance use when his mom becomes ill and passes away. Emma starts working as a teacher and dates a comedian named Ian, which frustrates Dexter since that limits her time and attention to him.

Things reach a boiling point at a catch-up dinner in 1995, where Dexter’s mean behavior proves to Emma how much he’s changed for the worse.

They stop being friends for a time. Emma breaks up with Ian and has a brief affair with her school headmaster, while Dexter begins a relationship with a woman named Sylvie. Emma and Dexter ultimately patch things up at a mutual friend’s wedding, where Dexter reveals that he’s getting married and having a child. His daughter, Jasmine, is born in early 2000.

Finally Together, But...

Dexter and Sylvie’s relationship falls apart when she has an affair, and he and Emma sleep together one evening. She later says she was simply a “shoulder to cry on,” and it didn’t mean anything more than that.

Still, when Emma travels to Paris to work on her next book, Dexter visits and makes her rethink her new French boyfriend. Finally, the two decide to start a real relationship together.

With Emma’s help, Dexter opens a cafe back in London. They get married and raise Jasmine together, co-parenting with Sylvie and trying for a baby themselves.

On July 15, 2004, Emma bikes to meet Dexter at a house they’re considering buying. But on the way there, she is hit by a car and dies.

Dexter goes through a rough period after Emma dies and resumes his substance use. But with his dad’s and Sylvie’s help, he can process the trauma. He starts dating Maddy, his manager from the cafe, and eventually takes Jasmine to climb Arthur’s Seat in Scotland like he once did with Emma. The book ends with a flashback to their first day together, when they said “goodbye” for the summer.

With Prison Certain and Death Likely, Why Did Navalny Return?

An activist who thrived on agitation, he feared irrelevancy in exile. Winning new respect as he continued to lambast the Kremlin from behind bars cost him his life.

  • Share full article

Aleksei A. Navalny surrounded by officials and people taking photographs with phones.

By Neil MacFarquhar

During the years he ran The New York Times Moscow bureau from 2014 to 2019, Neil MacFarquhar covered Mr. Navalny at numerous political rallies and protests.

There was one question that Russians repeatedly asked the opposition leader Aleksei A. Navalny, who died in a remote Arctic penal colony on Friday, and he confessed that he found it a little annoying.

Why, after surviving a fatal poisoning attempt widely blamed on the Kremlin, had he returned to Russia from his extended convalescence abroad to face certain imprisonment and possible death? Even his prison guards, turning off their recording devices, asked him why he had come back, he said.

“I don’t want to give up either my country or my beliefs,” Mr. Navalny wrote in a Jan. 17 Facebook post to mark the third anniversary of his return and arrest in 2021. “I cannot betray either the first or the second. If your beliefs are worth something, you must be willing to stand up for them. And if necessary, make some sacrifices.”

That was the direct answer, but for many Russians, both those who knew him and those who did not, the issue was more complex. Some of them considered it almost a classical Greek tragedy: The hero, knowing that he is doomed, returns home anyway because, well, if he didn’t, he would not be the hero.

Mr. Navalny’s motto was that there was no reason to fear the authoritarian government of President Vladimir V. Putin. He wanted to put that into practice, Russian commentators said, and as an activist who thrived on agitation, he feared sinking into irrelevancy in exile. The decision won him new respect and followers as he continued to lambast the Kremlin from his prison cell, but it also cost him his life.

“Navalny was about action,” said Abbas Gallyamov, a former Kremlin speechwriter who sometimes had differences with Mr. Navalny over that job. “For him politics was action, not just democracy and theory like it is for many in the Russian opposition. They are quite content to sit abroad, speaking and speaking and speaking without doing anything with their hands. For him that was unbearable.”

The return represented both his unbridled emotional attachment to the cause and his deep sincerity, Mr. Gallyamov added.

Still, it prompted extensive bafflement and curiosity, not least because he had a wife and two adolescent children who stayed in exile.

“Many have written throughout these three years: ‘Why did he come back, what kind of idiocy, what kind of senseless self-sacrifice?’” Andrey Loshak, a Russian journalist, wrote in a tribute published by Meduza, an independent news agency. “For those who knew him, it was natural: You see him in life and understand that a person cannot do otherwise.”

Mr. Loshak said that after Mr. Navalny’s return, he had posted the opposition leader’s picture with just one word for the caption: “Hero.” Before, he had considered that kind of self-sacrifice as the stuff of movies. “He was a beacon in this darkness — here he sits somewhere in these terrible punishment cells and laughs at them,” he wrote. “It shows that this is possible.”

Some people were wary of Mr. Navalny. He began his political career in the nationalist camp and made some offensive comments about immigrants. Later, he characterized it as a temporary step needed to start building the opposition from someplace, because the nationalists were the only group then willing to take to the streets.

A 28-year-old man living in Belgorod, near Ukraine , said that he had long been unsure of Mr. Navalny, and never considered him presidential material, but his return to Russia inspired new respect.

“Very dignified behavior and dignified acceptance of the inevitable,” the man wrote online in response to questions, declining to use his name while the Russian authorities were arresting some of those who mourned openly. “Aleksei was a brave man, worthy of respect, an example for many.”

Mr. Navalny himself expressed frustration that many Russians refused to take his decision to return at face value, sometimes implying that he had made some kind of background deal with the Kremlin. Perhaps he failed to express himself clearly enough, he wrote in the January Facebook post.

There were some echoes of history in the return. In 1917, after years of exile in Europe, Lenin memorably steamed into Finland Station in St. Petersburg by train, igniting tumultuous demonstrations that eventually brought the Bolsheviks to power and gave birth to the Soviet Union.

Mr. Gallyamov said he sometimes regretted that Mr. Navalny had returned in the middle of January, deep in the Russian winter and distant from any elections, so the protests ignited by his immediate arrest at a Moscow airport did not translate into any sustained political reaction.

Mr. Putin thought at various times that he had solved his Navalny problem, not least by letting him leave to recuperate in Germany after he had been poisoned. The perception was that anyone in their right mind would not come back, but Mr. Navalny did.

Even in prison, Mr. Navalny became an issue for the Kremlin with his ability to make his views heard, like endorsing the call for all voters in the coming March 15-17 presidential election to show up at the polls at noon on March 17 as a silent protest against the Ukraine war.

“When Navalny came back, it was a nightmare for Putin. People were saying that he was a survivor,” said Yevgenia Albats, a prominent Russian journalist now at Harvard University. Some went even further, she said, suggesting that he had been resurrected from the dead.

In authoritarian regimes, such political challenges often boil down to a duel between two men to see who can outlast the other, and that is what happened in this case, Mr. Gallyamov said.

“Deep down, it is a psychological fight between two characters over who is the more powerful person,” he said. “Since Navalny was a real challenger, a real fighter, that is why he stayed on the agenda.”

The most common reaction to his death among those who saw Mr. Navalny as the most viable opposition leader was that he had been murdered in prison, either directly or through three years of increasingly harsh conditions. The Kremlin, ever less tolerant of any criticism amid its stumbling war effort in Ukraine, silenced the moderates and gave free rein to the hawks, dooming Mr. Navalny, they said.

Asked about Mr. Navalny’s death, Dmitri S. Peskov, the spokesman for Mr. Putin, told reporters that he had no information on the cause of death but that it would be determined by doctors.

Ultimately, what drove Mr. Navalny to return to Russia was the fearlessness that he thought could bring him enormous political power, said Kirill Rogov, a former Russian government adviser who now leads Re: Russia, a Vienna-based think tank. “Navalny challenged them with his fearlessness,” he said. “They do not tolerate fearlessness.”

The example in South Africa of Nelson Mandela, who emerged from decades in prison a hero, troubled Mr. Putin, Mr. Rogov added.

In 2021, on the airplane back to Russia from Germany, Mr. Navalny sat next to his wife, Yulia, and together they watched “Rick and Morty,” an animated series involving a mad scientist.

At his first trial a month later, he quoted from the show in court: “To live is to risk it all,” he said. “Otherwise, you are just an inert chunk of randomly assembled molecules drifting wherever the universe blows you.”

Jailed Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny dies, prison service says

By Sophie Tanno, Karl de Vries , Sana Noor Haq, Zoe Sottile, Michael Williams, Adrienne Vogt and Matt Meyer , CNN

We've wrapped up our live coverage. You can read more about the reported death of Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny by scrolling through the posts below.

Biden says he holds Putin responsible as Russians attend vigils for Alexey Navalny. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

President Joe Biden delivers remarks on the reported death of Alexei Navalny from the Roosevelt Room of the White House on Friday, February 16.

US President Joe Biden was unequivocal Friday in laying blame on Russian President Vladimir Putin for the reported death of opposition figure Alexey Navalny , saying regardless of the details still to come, "Make no mistake: Putin is responsible."

Biden's comments came as Russians risked detention Friday night in Moscow and elsewhere across the country, attending rallies and vigils in Navalny's honor.

Navalny had been  serving multiple sentences  in a maximum security prison for fraud, extremism and other charges he denied as politically motivated. He was arrested shortly after returning to Russia following his recovery from a 2020 poisoning attempt that nearly killed him.

A chorus of European leaders have also been quick to blame the Putin regime. Russia's prison service, which reported the death Friday, says " all necessary measures " were taken to save Navalny after he "felt unwell after a walk," and that an investigation is underway.

Here's the latest:

  • More from Biden: Biden said the US doesn't yet know "exactly what happened, but there is no doubt that the death of Navalny was the consequence of something that Putin and his thugs did." The US president said the opposition leader had "bravely stood up to the corruption, the violence, and all the bad things that the Putin government was doing." He also said reports of Navalny's death should galvanize the United States to provide funding for Ukraine in the war against Russia. Elsewhere in Washington, Sens. Dick Durbin, a Democrat, and Bill Cassidy, a Republican, will introduce a bill to rename a section of a street near the Russian ambassador's residence "Alexei Navalny Way."
  • Dozens detained in Russia: At least 100 people have been detained across Russia for  attending vigils and rallies  following Navalny's death, according to  OVD-Info , a human rights group that monitors Russian repression. Rallies sprung up in cities from Rostov-on-Don to St. Petersburg and the capital of Moscow. Many Muscovites who spoke to CNN on Friday described a sense of hopelessness. "You begin to have a desire to leave because you stop believing in positive changes," said Artur, a 27-year-old biologist interviewed by Agence France-Presse.
  • Analysis: CNN's  Nick Paton Walsh  said Navanly's death comes at an unexpected time  for Russia and the Kremlin. It does not seem that Putin needed Navalny to die now. The dissident’s voice had been quieted as he served time on the Arctic circle. "Yet still, Vladimir Putin felt a degree of threat," Paton Walsh wrote . News of Navalny's death came shortly before Russia's presidential election, scheduled to take place on March 17, where Putin is widely expected to win a fifth term.
  • Dive deeper: You can review Navalny's life in photos and view this timeline of key events for the opposition figure. The CNN film chronicling the attempted assassination of Navalny in 2020 airs Saturday at 9 p.m. ET on CNN and is  streaming on Max .

Hillary Clinton says Navalny's death is a warning to those who think they can "make a deal" with Putin

From CNN's Niamh Kennedy

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton speaks with NN's Christiane Amanpour on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Friday, February 16.

Alexey Navalny's reported death sends a strong message to people in the United States who think they can "somehow make a deal" with Russian President Vladimir Putin, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told CNN.

Clinton described the Russian opposition figure's death as "tragic" in an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Friday.

Clinton said she had become well-acquainted with Navalny's daughter and wife .

The former secretary of state said Navalny's death sends a message to "people in Europe and in the United States" who "think that you can somehow make a deal with Putin."

"A dictator, as (Putin) is, intends only to dominate — and if that means killing your opposition, as he's done with so many people over so many years, or invading a peaceful neighbor and trying to bend it to his will, that's what he will do," she added.

Over 100 detained across Russia for attending Navalny vigils, says human rights group

From CNN’s Eve Brennan and Uliana Pavlova

A frame from video from independent Russian news outlet SOTA, shows hows a skirmish between police and a protester in Moscow on Fridday, February 16.

At least 100 people have been detained across Russia for attending vigils and rallies following the reported death of Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny, according to OVD-Info , a human rights group that monitors Russian repression.

There have been detentions across the country, including in Murmansk, Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod and St. Petersburg.

At the many vigils across the country, people paid their respects to Navalny, including laying down flowers and carrying posters, social media and news agency videos show. Police are also seen walking some attendees into police vans.

It's unclear how many people have been detained. OVD-Info reports some of those detained have already been released.

The office of the prosecutor in Moscow warned Russians earlier Friday that demonstrations in the capital were not authorized and that attendees could be placed under administrative arrest.

This post has been updated with the latest total of Russians detained.

Navalny had denounced Russia's invasion of Ukraine from prison. Read up on war developments here

From CNN's Haley Britzky, Olga Voitovych and Nadine Schmidt

Since he was imprisoned in 2021, Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine  via social media and encouraged anti-war protests across the country.

The reported death of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most high-profile critic  punctuates a crackdown on dissidence in Russia that has accelerated during the war.

Here’s the latest on Russia's war in Ukraine:

Attacks continue: At least five people were killed and five injured in Russian attacks in the Kharkiv, Kherson and Donetsk regions of Ukraine in the past 24 hours, local officials said Friday.

Frontline battle:  Ukraine’s Third Separate Assault Brigade said at least 15,000 enemy troops are fighting on the front line in the town of Avdiivka , located in the eastern Donetsk region. Russia has been pummeling the town with airstrikes and artillery, while launching wave after wave of ground assaults by armored vehicles and soldiers. Ukraine’s new army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov this week visited soldiers on the front lines there.

A senior US defense official said Friday that Ukrainian forces fighting in Avdiivka are “running short on critical supplies, particularly ammunition.”

Uncertain future: The senior US defense official issued a stark warning on Friday that if Congress does not approve more funding for security assistance to Ukraine, the US will not be able to provide Ukraine more air defenses, which will lead to more cities being "bombarded."

“We will see more civilians dying, and we will see Ukraine struggling to protect their critical infrastructure and their forward line of troops,” the official said, of allowing funding to lapse.

Cost of war:  The US estimated the war in Ukraine has cost Russia up to $211 billion in efforts to upkeep operations, a senior defense official told reporters on Friday, and it has cost Russia an expected $1.3 trillion in lost economic growth.

All of that is in addition to personnel losses, the official said. Officials estimate Russian forces have lost 315,000 people. The official also said Ukrainian forces have “sunk, destroyed, or damaged” at least 20 “medium-to-large Russian Federation Navy vessels” and one Russian tanker in the Black Sea.

Agreement with Germany: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday secured new military aid and signed a long-term security agreement with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin. The security agreement, which will last for 10 years, commits Germany to supporting Ukraine with military aid and hitting Russia with sanctions and export controls, and ensuring that Russian assets remain frozen.

"Hope dies": Muscovites react to reports of Navalny's death

From CNN’s Eve Brennan

Moscow residents reacted to the news of Alexey Navalny’s reported death on Friday, with some describing it as “fate” while others said they are “shocked."

Some Muscovites laid flowers and a photo of Navalny at a makeshift memorial in the Russian capital, according to Reuters footage.

Valeria , a 23-year-old tour guide, called Navalny a "symbol" in an interview with Agence France-Presse.

"First of all, a symbol of opposition, a symbol of hope for some brighter future for Russia. And there's a feeling that with his death, this hope dies. If there had been still been any hope left, it is even less now than it was before," she said.

Artur , a 27-year-old biology student, told AFP:

Vladimir, an 84-year-old former psychologist, called Navalny "a simply fundamental element of life for us."

Moscow resident Alexander told Reuters he thought Navalny’s death was “expected," adding, "The news said he was being kept in bad conditions that weren't fit to live in."

Meanwhile, Muscovite Tatiana said: “Anything can happen in life. I think it's fate, honestly.”

“It's not political or anything. I think that ... it's a shame. I'm shocked and upset. It's a shame for the family. He was a young man, should have lived a long time,” she added.

Another Moscow resident, Mikhail , said he believes “enemies” of Russia “should be dealt with, the sooner the better.”

“Glory to our world freedom and our president,” he said.

Navalny's supporters: Navalny garnered a sizable support base during his political career, organizing anti-government street protests, and using his blog and social media to expose alleged corruption in the Kremlin and in Russian business.

He and his supporters claimed his arrest and incarceration in 2021 were politically motivated, intended to muzzle his dissent against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

CNN's Anna Chernova, Niamh Kennedy and Christian Edwards contributed reporting.

Moscow prosecutor's office warns protests related to Navalny's death are not authorized

The prosecutor's office in Moscow has warned that any demonstrations in the Russian capital over the reported death of Alexey Navalny have not been authorized.

In a statement posted on its official website Friday, the prosecutor addressed individuals considering participating in a "mass action" in Moscow city center.

"We draw attention to the fact that this mass event has not been coordinated with the city's executive authorities in accordance with the procedure established by law," the prosecutor stressed.

The prosecutor warned that both appeals to participate and participation in unauthorized mass actions constitute offenses under Russian law and could result in individuals being placed under administrative arrest.

Jailed Russian opposition figure and outspoken Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny  has died at the age of 47 , the Russian prison service said Friday.

Navalny "felt unwell after a walk" and "almost immediately" lost consciousness, the prison service said. It said it was investigating his "sudden death."

Navalny had long been a thorn in the side of President Vladimir Putin, exposing corruption in high places, campaigning against the ruling United Russia party, and orchestrating some of the biggest anti-government protests seen in recent years.

He returned to Russia in 2021 from Germany, where he had been treated after being poisoned with Novichok, a Soviet-era nerve agent. Upon his return, he was swiftly arrested on charges he dismissed as politically motivated.

US President Joe Biden and several European leaders have been quick to blame Putin for Navalny's death, though the exact circumstances remain unknown.

Alexey Navalny is seen behind the bars of a police van in Moscow after he was detained during protests in 2012.

Timing of Navalny's death suggests Putin "felt a degree of threat," CNN journalist says

From CNN's Nick Paton Walsh and Sana Noor Haq

In the weeks preceding Alexey Navalny's reported death on Friday, concerns for his welfare intensified after he was taken to a penal colony north of the Arctic Circle.

The timing of his death is significant "because it shows us something about how (Russian President) Vladimir Putin feels at this particular time," according to CNN's Nick Paton Walsh.

"Navalny was pretty much as far out of the way as you could put him," he told CNN's This Morning on Friday. "He was out, it seems, of the political arena. He never really got a foothold in the electoral process ... yet still, Vladimir Putin felt a degree of threat."

It came shortly before Russia's presidential election, scheduled to take place on March 17, where Putin is widely expected to win a fifth term in a move that would see him retain power until at least 2030.

European leaders blame Putin: The exact circumstances of Navalny's death are unknown, but "we are hearing leading European politicians pointing the finger at the Kremlin," added Paton Walsh. A growing chorus of European leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky , Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics and Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre have already cast blame on Moscow.

"Ultimately, you could not have a more sore reminder of the urgency of the danger that Vladimir Putin places to Europe with the Ukraine war entering into its third year, and to his own population in that autocratic environment," Paton Walsh said.

One day: 10 best quotes from netflix's tv show.

Netflix's One Day has an assortment of quotes that perfectly capture the relatable themes of the series, such as romance, adulthood, and grief.

  • "You've never seen me before in your life." - Dexter and Emma's opposite worlds collide in a playful yet significant first meeting.
  • "Are people really having that good a time?" - Emma questions her post-college life compared to Dexter's success, hinting at insecurities.
  • "I'm not being a footnote." - Emma wants to remain a constant in Dexter's life, showcasing their deep connection and friendship.

The themes in Netflix's One Day are wonderfully represented in the series' best quotes. One Day follows two individuals, Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall), reuniting on the same day every year after first meeting in 1988. The series focuses on the romantic nature between the two and with this comes significant quotes that are both heartwarming and heartbreaking .

One Day is based on a novel of the same name by David Nicholls, which was also previously adapted for a film in 2011. Throughout their story, Emma and Dexter experience many personal changes, but the other remains a constant key figure in their lives. One Day is a romantic drama but still manages to spotlight other relatable topics, such as transitioning into life after college and the loss of loved ones. These quotes best represent the themes in One Day and the significant points throughout Emma and Dexter's decade-plus journey together.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Netflix's One Day.

This custom image shows Dex and Emma in One Day.

One Day Cast & Character Guide

10 "you've never seen me before in your life.", episode 1, "1988.".

Whilst drunk and dancing, Emma laughs off Dexter's attempt at recalling where he'd seen her before in school, telling him, " You've never seen me before in your life. " While the quote is said playfully, it still holds a lot of significance and sums up their relationship. Emma finds it slightly humorous that Dex would have seen her before that night because they ran in opposite social circles and spent their years in college differently.

Emma and Dexter's complicated friendship and love story fit within the trope of opposites-attract couples . Their differing approaches to life come up multiple times throughout the series , as Dexter becomes a large TV personality and Emma is focused on her writing. When Emma and Dex see each other during their yearly reunion, their contrasting lifestyles always either lead to defensive arguments or a much-needed push in the right direction.

9 "Are People Really Having That Good A Time?"

Episode 3, "1990.".

Dexter and Emma lying down on the grass.

When outside, Emma observes two people tossing around a frisbee and asks Dexter, " Are people really having that good a time? " Among the themes of friendship and romance in One Day , there's also an important theme of adulthood, and finding one's place in the world after college. Up until this point, Emma had been working unfulfilling jobs, such as touring with a theater group and working at a dismal Mexican restaurant. Especially after meeting up with Dexter, who's become a TV personality and appears to be happy and successful, Emma's question seems to be asking what she is doing wrong.

8 "One Selected Day Struck Out Of Your Life."

Episode 10, "1997.".

Dexter and Emma sitting together in the maze.

Emma makes a speech at her friend Tilly's wedding in which she quotes Charles Dickens and says, " Imagine one selected day struck out of your life and think how different its course would have been . " Although Emma is talking about Tilly's relationship, there's an obvious parallel to her connection with Dexter as the quote symbolizes their entire journey together . They each greatly affected one another, and it's difficult to imagine the course their lives would have taken had they not made a tradition of meeting every year around St. Swithin's Day .

7 "I Was Just Waiting For You."

Episode 13, "2000. 2001. 2002.".

Dexter and Emma hold hands as Jasmine is lying in between them.

After finally starting a proper relationship with one another, Emma tells Dexter she's ready to start a family. When she asks how he feels about doing so, he tells her, " I was just waiting for you ." His response is endearing during the moment and heartbreaking by the end of the episode. The romantic relationship between Dex and Emma is captivating and believable due to their connection being grounded in friendship , rather than fleeting lust. From Dexter's response, it appears he's always known exactly what he's wanted with Emma and now all the pieces have finally fallen into place.

7 Reasons Netflix's One Day Show Is Way Better Than The Anne Hathaway Movie

6 "you used to make me feel good about myself.", episode 7, "1994.".

Emma standing with tears in her eyes and crossing her arms.

No romantic drama is complete without conflict looming over the couple and, during an argument, Emma tells Dex, " You used to make me feel good about myself. " This occurs after the two meet up and during their conversation, Dexter boasts about his extravagant lifestyle, which makes Emma feel poorly about herself. Emma's tearful comment is a sad juxtaposition to Dexter's compliments towards her earlier in the series. This argument, while difficult to watch, proves to be beneficial to Emma and Dexter as they spend some time apart and better themselves as individuals before coming together at the end.

5 "We Grew Up Together."

At this point in the series, Emma and Dexter are engaged, and she comes across Dexter's outline for his wedding speech. One of the lines reads, " We grew up together. " Similarly to Emma's speech at Tilly's wedding, this line greatly depicts the years Emma and Dex have spent with one another. There were many instances over the years when it was clear the two needed to find their footing in life before being with one another . Still, even through many changes in their individual lives, they could always rely on each other during hard times.

4 "There Was Yet Another Date Of Greater Importance."

Episode 14, "2003. 2004. 2007.".

Emma and Dexter lying on the carpet as she reads to him.

When Emma spent Christmas with Dexter and his family in 1988, she reads him a passage from a novel by Thomas Hardy, which says, " There was yet another date of greater importance...her own death. A day which lay sly and unseen . " Although the scene in which this quote is heard takes place at the beginning of Emma and Dexter's story, it's not seen until One Day 's final episode. It comes after Emma's death, making her fascination with the passage all the more tragic .

Considering the entirety of One Day is centered on one important date, the quote has a heavier meaning beyond what Dexter and Emma are discussing in 1988. It just so happens the date of Emma's death becomes significant for two reasons. Meaning that starting the final episode with this quote and the flashback scene is saddening, as Dexter and Emma at that moment were unaware that the " sly and unseen " day would fall on the anniversary of their meeting, years earlier.

3 "You Should Have Said Hello."

Emma and Dexter standing outside the door.

The idea of fate and 'what-ifs' is present throughout all of One Day , so when Dexter tells Emma, " You should have said hello ," it's worth wondering where they would've ended up had they met sooner . As a matter of fact, while on a trip to Greece together earlier in the series, Emma confesses she had a crush on Dex before they properly met. Therefore, it's reasonable for audiences to ponder the outcome of their connection, had they begun dating sooner.

2 "It Won't Always Be Like This."

During a conversation in which Dexter imagines after Emma has passed away, she reassures him, " It won't always be like this " and that " time " is the solution to feeling better. Though this scene wasn't present in the novel, it's an important moment in Dexter's ending . After Emma's death, Dexter struggles immensely and is unsure of how to move on . Emma's reassurance was another helpful push, and likely not the last, to get Dexter's life back on track. Following this scene, Dexter visits the places he and Emma spent during their early years, reflecting happily on old memories.

1 "I'm Not Being A Footnote."

Emma and Dexter lying down on Arthur's Seat.

One Day 's ending wraps up Emma and Dexter's story in a bittersweet way. While visiting places Dexter and Emma spent time at, scenes from their earlier days together appear as flashbacks. One of these scenes is when they are coming down from Arthur's Seat, discussing the previous night. Emma tells Dexter she'd like to remain friends and says, " I'm not being a footnote ," referring to being a footnote in his life story . It's the final tearful moment in the series, as Emma's insistence on being a part of Dexter's life is touching, knowing just how important she'd become to him.

One Day Netflix 2024 TV Poster

Based on the novel by David Nicholls, One Day is a 2024 romantic drama series created by Nicole Taylor. Despite their lives drifting apart after high school, Dex and Emma reunite one day every year as their lives run parallel. Love, heartbreak, and the experience of growing apart together lie at the center of this decade-spanning love story.
